Apparel Characteristics

Modern soccer kits are performance-engineered garments. Fabric, fit, and construction durability are deliberate decisions at every level of the sport.

Fabric

Lightweight polyester or polyester-blend, typically 100–140 gsm. Engineered for athletic performance.

Breathability
Moisture wick
Stretch
UV resistance
Fabric

From athletic to compression — fit is tuned for position, climate, and player preference.

  • Athletic fit — slim; standard for outfield players
  • Relaxed fit — older style; common in youth play
  • Compression base layer — form-fitting for support
  • GK jersey — padded elbows, slightly roomier
  • Cut adjusted per position for range of motion
Durability

Match kits must survive a 30–50+ match season with weekly laundering and outdoor UV exposure.

  • Double-stitched seams at stress points
  • Heat-transfer numbers resist cracking
  • Colorfast dyes rated for 50+ wash cycles
  • Training kits use heavier fabric weight
  • Grip socks reinforced at heel and toe

Official Rules Around Uniforms & Gear

Player equipment is governed by FIFA’s Laws of the Game and each competition’s own regulations. Non-compliance can mean exclusion from play.

Both teams must wear clearly distinct colors. If similar, the away team changes. Referee decides before kickoff.

  • Goalkeeper must differ from all outfield players and the referee
  • Undershorts must match the primary shorts color
  • Sock tape must match the sock color it secures
  • Third kits allowed when both home and away clash
  • All colorways must be registered before the season
