How To Measure Jackets

Chest Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level and snug.

Front Length Measurement

Start measuring from the top of the shoulder near the collar down to the jacket hem.

Sleeve Measurement

Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff along the outer arm.

Tips for Accuracy

Shoulder width is the most critical. Jacket shoulder seams must sit exactly at the edge of your natural shoulder, this is quite impossible to alter afterwards.
Button or zip before measuring the chest. Account for layers you plan to wear underneath — add 1–2 inches for a light layer, 2–3 inches for a sweater.
Check sleeve length with the jacket over a shirt. Sleeves should break at the wrist bone, showing a half inch of shirt cuff on formal jackets.
Measure back length from the center of the back collar seam straight down to the hem. This tells if the jacket will cover your seat, fall at the hip, or sit cropped.
Note lapel width for formal jackets. Measure at the widest point. Wide lapels (3.5+ inches) are classic; narrow (2–2.5 inches) are modern.

FAQ

Buying with shoulders that are too wide. People size up for chest room, but overhung shoulders look ill-fitting and cost significantly more to alter than taking in the waist.

For a light shirt, allow 2–3 inches of chest ease. For a thick sweater or hoodie, add another 2–3 inches. A jacket that fits over a t-shirt will feel tight over a sweater.

Lay a well-fitting jacket flat and measure: shoulder width, chest (pit-to-pit), sleeve length, and back length. Compare to the product’s listed measurements — far more reliable than going by labeled size.

Look for brands with “tall” sizing or separate sleeve length options. Jacket sleeves can only be let down if there’s enough seam allowance, which isn’t guaranteed — don’t rely on alterations.

Yes. When buttoned, you should be able to slide a flat hand between the jacket and your chest. More than that is too loose; less is too tight. Pulling or an “X” shape at the button means the chest is too small.
